the urban dictionary seems to validate our theory as indicated in this here [most popular]definition:
an older woman who frequents clubs in order to score with a much younger man. The cougar can be anyone from an overly surgically altered wind tunnel victim, to an absolute sad and bloated old horn-meister, to a real hottie or milf. Cougars are gaining in popularity -- particularly the true hotties -- as young men find not only a sexual high, but many times a chick with her shit together.
so then we started talking about the cougars in our lives and then pondered at what age one becomes a cougar. we all agreed that most likley, cougars start to form in the late 30s, or early 40s. the age break is quite subjective, it turns out, but we all agreed 35 was probably at the younger end. we assured a paranoid young natalie that she was in no way in dangerous cougar territory at the tender age of 25. ah, sweet natalie.
anyway! i felt good that none of my friends would be considered cougars, although most of them are dating/in serious relationships anyway... but it is something to be wary of in the next few years as they approach the *gulp* mid-30s.
[incidentally, my friend L is currently dating a man approximately 7 years younger than her, but she is a fresh young 30 yet... hmmmm]
my point? was.. oh! i was perusing OK on the treadmill this morning and i noticed an article on the TOP 10 COUGARS (timely topic indeed). the list included some obvious cougars; pamela anderson, dina lohan, ellen barkin...but then it also included cameron diaz (35) and drew barrymore (32). really?
what do you guys think? should drew barrymore be considered a COUGAR?? she seems so young to me. and she's older than me by a whole year! am i in AGE DENIAL here?

I think it seems odd to call Drew Barrymore a cougar. 32 isn't old at all. Or, I hope not since I am a bit older than that.
Drew Barrymore is no Cougar - and I'm not just saying that because she is my age. I think they were trying to stretch to reach 10 in their top 10 list and Drew is dating someone younger than her. Although when you are talking about 29 and 32 is that actually younger at all?
Anyway, no worries. OK magazine got it wrong...this time.
I did a post awhile ago about cougars (me at 38) and kittens (which you are)and it was pretty funny - I don't see Drew as a true cougar yet - maybe a tween....and as for Pamela Anderson..she's just not even qualified in my book...
Concur on PamAnd, that's a disease waiting to happen. I think Drew almost kinda sorta works because she's been around so long and is such a known quantity that she seems older than she is. Based only on perception of her career, I totally would have pegged her as 35.
Ashley Judd was on the list, right? I mean, sure, she's dating an older dude, but she hangs out at all those college games...
I agree Drew is way to young to be considered a cougar. After all, the 30's are the new 20's.:)
Agreed. Drew is in no way a cougar. TO be honest, I don't even think she's hot. I hope Diane Lane was on that list!
Drew is not a cougar, imo.
I don’t have a problem with the older woman/ younger man thing but cougars should never date younger men that don’t have their sh!t together.
That being said, I have a friend who started dating (actually she cheated on her husband) a 24 year old carless (not a misspelling of careless, I do mean CARLESS) loser/criminal/weed fiend/deadbeat dad/dumbass when she was 36. Three years later, she’s divorced and just had a baby with her jobless dickhead boytoy. SO NOT HAPPY! But what can I say? Not a darn thing. I’m glad I don’t live in the same state as them because I really want to smack her one and do a krav maga move on her stupid bf’s face. Does that make me a bad friend?
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest Ms. rubiquity.
